Tips for training for your first half marathon!!

I have always been competitive and that is great but it can also be really hard on yourself! I have ran a couple 5ks and one day during one of those races I thought if they can run a half marathon than I can too!! So I gave myself 4 weeks to train for 13.1 miles!!! Tip #1 – give yourself plenty of time to train! Yes I made it without stopping (because I’m so competitive, I pushed through it) but I would recommend giving yourself 6-12 weeks of training depending on your exercise ability! I followed a plan I found on Pinterest and crammed it down to 4 weeks which is crazy but I made it work! Tip #2 is just keep increasing! I am a mother with a full time job, a blog and I also was working on my masters during this time! I was busy and life doesn’t always go perfectly! If you can just make sure to increase your distance ever week you will be fine!! I increased each week by two miles! Tip #3 is go easy on yourself and know your limits. I’m not a major runner, but I like to try new things! So I recommend listening to your body! If you hurt than stop and try another day! I trained during the summer and if I tried to run in the evenings while it was still 90 degrees I couldn’t do it, I had to get up early and run during the cool weather! This brings me to my next tip- where there is a will there is a way!! Yes I was crazy busy… so I got up at 6ish or before and ran! I am very grateful my husband helped watch our son while I went to run before work! I had to sacrifice an hour of sleep but I knew I wanted to achieve my goal! Tip #5 is wear good shoes! When it comes to this far of a distance wearing good training shoes is very important!! Tip #6 is on the days you decide to run your longer distances make sure you eat properly the night before or morning of! Running long distances requires that you have enough fuel from food to get you through the journey! I am a firm believer in meat and potatoes! Tip #7 is get your mind mentally prepared! I had to mentally think of other things besides running! If I thought ouch this hurts or geez I have so far to go I wouldn’t be able to complete my goal! You have to mentally treat it like your going for a walk! I think this type of race is 90% mental!! You have to mentally be calm and ready to just keep going! The only way I could do this is if I would pray and thank God for all my blessings! I would literally name every single blessing!! And… Finally my last tip is you can do it! Just believe you can! I prayed that I could finish the race and God helped me believe in myself that I could do anything I put my mind too!!
